What Is GEO? A Small Business Guide to Showing Up in AI Search
More people are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews for recommendations instead of typing a search and clicking through a list of links. If your business isn't set up to be understood by those systems, you can be invisible to an entire category of customers, even if your website ranks fine in classic search.
GEO, in plain terms
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI systems can find, understand, and confidently recommend your business, the same way SEO has long been about ranking well in a traditional list of search results.
The two work together rather than replacing each other. Good SEO still matters. GEO is the next layer on top of it, aimed at a different moment: the point where someone asks an AI assistant a question instead of typing it into a search bar.
How GEO is different from SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list that a person scans and clicks through. GEO optimizes for being the source an AI system paraphrases, quotes, or recommends directly, often without the person ever visiting a website at all.
That changes what "winning" looks like. A page can rank well in Google and still get skipped over by an AI answer if the AI can't easily pull a clear, confident fact out of it.
The building blocks of GEO
- Clear, factual statements. Say plainly what you do, who you serve, and where, instead of burying it in marketing language.
- Structured content. FAQ sections and clearly labeled service pages give an AI system an easy shape to extract answers from.
- Structured data (schema markup). Organization, Service, and FAQPage schema describe your business in a format machines can read directly.
- An llms.txt file. A short, plain-text summary of your site written specifically for AI systems to read.
- An open robots.txt. Many businesses accidentally block AI crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot without realizing it.
- Consistency. The same facts about your business, stated the same way across your site and other listings, so an AI system has reason to trust the information.
An AI system will rarely recommend a business it can't confidently describe. Clarity is the whole game.
Why this matters now
Fewer searches are ending in a click. For some kinds of questions, the AI-generated answer is the only interaction a potential customer has with your information. If your business isn't part of that answer, you don't get considered at all, regardless of how good your service actually is.
The businesses that adapt early get an advantage that's hard to catch up on later: they become the source AI systems already trust by the time competitors start paying attention.

Talk to usFAQ
Is GEO the same thing as SEO?
No. SEO helps your site rank in a list of search results. GEO helps AI systems like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews understand and recommend your business directly. They overlap but aren't the same discipline.
Do I need to choose between SEO and GEO?
No. Most of the technical foundation, like clear content, fast pages, and structured data, benefits both. GEO adds a few extra pieces on top, like an llms.txt file and FAQ-style content.
How do I know if AI systems can see my site?
Check your robots.txt file for disallow rules targeting AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot. If none are blocked and your site is otherwise indexable, AI systems can generally access it.
